The “Virginia is for Lovers”slogan was adopted in 1969 (yes, that is 50 years ago) and was inducted into the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame in 2009. The original concept was to celebrate all of the regions of Virginia with modifiers – “Virginia is for history lovers,” or “Virginia is for beach lovers” for example. It was thought that this might be limiting and so the simplified version we have all come to know and love was adopted instead https://www.virginia.org/virginiaisforlovers/.
